“We at SAL understand the importance of transparency for nonprofit organizations, and we endeavor
to be responsive to all appropriate requests for information, while at the same time protecting
information that is proprietary to SAL and its member clubs.” Pennsylvania nonprofit law requires
that certain records be made available for inspection and copying (1023/current & past 990N’s below)
upon request by a member for a “proper purpose”. A proper purpose is defined as “a purpose
reasonably related to the interest of the person as a member”.
The SAL operated as an unincorporated association since its inception in 1968. In 2016, its members
decided to officially incorporate so as to formalize the League’s operations, governance structure and
succession plan. The League members also determined it was in their best interests to seek tax-
exempt status so as to allow for further growth through fundraising.
Participants in a member club should contact the officers of his/her club and, assuming the club is a
SAL member, have them make a formal request to the League Chairperson and Treasurer for
inspection of SAL’s records in compliance with Pennsylvania nonprofit law. The Audit and Finance
Committee meets several times per year to ensure the SAL is following all requirements of the state
and federal government. While a Treasury Report is presented at the Fall Representatives’ Meeting, a
yearly Profit and Loss Report for the fiscal year is presented each season at the Spring
Representatives’ Meeting and is available on the League website.
